Today at 12h00, Fundación Telefónica is presenting in Barcelona the study “Mobile Communications and Economic and Social Development in Latin America” (Comunicaciones Móviles y Desarrollo Económico y Social en América Latina).

After the summer break, public policy issues are numerous for the ICT sector in this beginning of autumn 2011…Here is a brief overview of some of the main events and issues we will follow during the next weeks:

Do you know what Wayra means? It means “wind” in Quechua and it is a recently new and innovative initiative launched by Telefónica. Gonzalo Martín-Villa, Global Head of Wayra, explains to us the main drivers of this amazing project.

As announced in this Blog, during the last 18-19th of July, the XIV Summit of Regulators and Operators AHCIET REGULATEL was held in Santo Domingo. The Summit was untitled “Broadband: The Challenge for Latin America of inclusion and sustainability of networks” and I had the chance to attend it.

Like in previous occasions, the Summit was an excellent opportunity to meet and dialogue with regulators and telecom operators present in Latin American markets.

As announced in our Blog, the first Digital Agenda Assembly took place at the nice Autoworld Centre in Brussels on 16-17 June. We were more than 1300 participants, and apparently 800 could not attend!

It was amusing to discuss and debate actions towards new technologies for a better future in Europe surrounded by old car and antique aircrafts…A nice and amazing constrast, I would say.

This week, in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), hosted by INDOTEL (Dominican Institute of Telecommunications), there is an interesting Summit, one of the leading forums bringing together regulators (Regulatel) and operators (AHCIET, the Iberoamerican Association of Investigation Centers and Companies of Telecommunications) in Latin America with their host, to debate about Broadband evolution and the challenges ahead for the Latinamerican region.

The Report “InnovaLatino: Fostering Innovation in Latin America”, is the result of a two year-long investigation project. It was produced by INSEAD and the OECD Development Centre with the support of Fundación Telefónica, and is based on a survey of 1,500 manufacturers in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay.
